Past and present rulers of the UAE.

On the left: Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (1918 - 2004) - the principal architect of the United Arab Emirates. He was the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the UAE for over 30 years (1971-2004).

On the right: Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (1949 - ) - currently the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates, as well as the Ruler of Dubai.

This photo was taken in May 2004, at which time Sheikh Zayed was still the President of the UAE, and Sheikh Mohammed was Crown Prince of Dubai.

Sheikh Zayed died on 2 November 2004; Sheikh Mohammed became the Ruler of Dubai on 4 January 4 2006 on the death of his elder brother Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
